Erk...
If you can shut the database down and dump it to filesystem at a preset
time in the middle of the night then the actual backup can take place at
any time after that.
The problem with backing up/restoring actual DB images is that while it
_usually_ works if the DB was shut down, there are odd edge cases where it
doesn't (not to mention that a DB dump is fairly portable).

Let me chime in here. If your system is Oracle, I know for a fact that the
shutdown commands can sometimes hang and be unreliable. The best option is
to do a hot backup with a SQL script and use Bacula to back up the hot
backup files and the archive logs. Then you can get a GOOD backup without
ever having to shut down the DB. Make sure you test restoring (to a test DB
or a different server) to make sure you have the method down. It's much
more reliable than forcing the DB to shut down and doing a cold backup.
