Yes. It's not really useful to have a tape device executable...

Yes.

Also try dd and/or tar with that drive; last time I had to look into 
this, IDE tapes were a real pain under linux (basically unusable). 
With today's SATA plus libata things might have improved, but still I 
guess the real problem might be badly supported hardware in your case. 
Not by Bacula itself, but by the underlying drivers in the kernel.
