Just inserting this for any other Linux 'newbies' trying to configure this
excellent program.

I had added a password to my MySQL configuration

I ended up configuring MySQL manually, but you could run the scripts to
configure MySQL and append the -p switch, and you will be prompted for your
password. This is only required during the setup and not for running Bacula.

(i.e.) ./grant_mysql_privileges -p

This is a mysql configuration issue and is not directly related to bacula.
You need root or whatever is the database admin account to be able to login
to the mysql database so the bacula scripts can create the catalog. There
should be some instructions for you distribution on administering mysql.
