I'd suggest to try to run the DIR as root from the shell, in the 
foreground, with debug output enabled once. That should work in any 
case, unless the configuration is incomplete or the catalog is not 
available.

After that, verify which user you ususally use to run the DIR as - 
probably "bacula".

The important thing to do is, after running the DIR as root, to change 
the file ownership of some essential files it needs to the normal 
Bacula user - log file, state file, bootstrap files and spool files.

I don't know the paths Bacula uses under ubuntu, but something like 
'chown bacula: /var/bacula/working/*' might be needed. Also don't 
forget to ensure the bacula user has write permissions to its working 
directory!
