Please see the difference between a server and a client. Backuppc needs
to send emails from time to time, but instead of creating/writing a new
email client, we re-use other existing interface to send email. The
"standard" interface for the last 20 years (or more) is sendmail. Every
major email system (exim4, qmail, sendmail, postfix, etc) will include a
small sendmail compatible interface so that emails can be submitted to it.

So, you will need some sort of email system with a basic configuration
so that emails can be received with the "sendmail" compatible system,
and will then be forwarded (perhaps with authentication) to your actual
email server. You may use postfix, or any other system that you are
comfortable with, personally I've used nullmailer on a number of my
systems which works pretty well, and is quite small/simple to configure.

To configure backuppc for the content of those emails etc, please see
the excellent backuppc documentation (there will be a link on your
installed backuppc webpage).

Regards,
Adam
