I could be completely wrong but, I have v4.0alpha and v3.31(?) running on two different machines and both are just doing their job. Backing up clients at their locations.
Backuppc (IMO) has always been a simple frontend for rsync with some scripts that guide rsync (and other programs) to store backups.
At this moment, those scripts are working fine with the current versions of rsync (and all the other programs (MySQL, LAMP stack, etc.) needed to make Backuppc work.)
All these other programs are independent of Backuppc and until those scripts (that essentially are Backuppc) fail, we the users have little to fear . . . not trying to start any fear and doubt . . . otherwise known as FUD.
Today, there are thousands of Backuppc machines running everywhere.
Someday, when the need arises, someone will pickup the banner and run with it. Post the fix to whatever script needs a line change and we the users will continue to enjoy the benefits.
Just my two cents . . . (but, if someone out there is thinking of picking up the banner . . . think about ACL's . . . to me this appears to be the next needed step, that was started by Craig with v4.0 that currently does not work.)
See there is a need, now!!

Hi Michael! When it will become too mature, it will fall down!
The World outside IS evolving!
Today BPC is a great piece of software and I use it and I like it, but in a few year without development it will be good for a place in a OSS Museum!

why would you need an alternative? BackupPC is a mature product. I do
not miss any features. Just use it.
In fact, I appreciate the fact that it is not evolving to a feature
monster over time.
