Hi Bowie,
Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it, but the result is still the same.
I added now the "-v" option to the rsync command. That gives at the end of the
failing backup for rsync version 2.6.9
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
overflow: flags=0x74d l1=0 l2=774910001, lastname=
fileListRecieve() failed
Done: 0 files, 0 bytes
Got fatal error during xfer (fileListRecieve failed)
cmdSystem0rEval: about to system /bin/ping -c -l client_machine
cmdSystem0rEval: finished: got output PING client_machine (client_IP) 56(84)
bytes of data.
64 bytes from client_machine (client_IP): icmp_reg=1 ttl=64 time=1.37 ms
.
CheckHostAlive: returning 0.585
Backup aborted (fileListRecieved failed)
Not saving this as a partial backup since it has fewer files than the prior one
(got 0 and 0 files versus 0)
Dump failed: fileListRecieve failed
$sh: 5: ?62: not found
sh: 5: 9: not found
.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And for rsync version 3.0.9 the result
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
overflow: flags=0xe3 l1=17 l2=1169817600, lastname=
overflow: flags=0x616d l1=116 l2=4581, lastname=0.mat
overflow: flags=0xda l1=0 l2=1174405103, lastname=0.mat

overflow: flags=0x61 l1=116 l2=4600, lastname=0.mat
overflow: flags=0x616d l1=116 l2=4594, lastname=0.mat

Not saving this as a partial backup since it has fewer files than the prior one

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any idea on that kind of output?
Thanks in advance, Thomas

Try again using "su - backuppc, ssh ..."
The '-' will ensure that you have the backuppc user's environment and not just
the permissions.
