Thank you for your suggestion. I logged on once accepting the remote key
fingerprint. In the meanwhile, I excluded the user's home folder + the backup
runs for the remaining folders. Can a file in a user's folder cause rsync to
get "Killed"?

That usually happens to me when I didn't connect once to the remote SSH host
using the backuppc account, and that the remote key fingerprint hasn't been
verified.
