Watch your link with something like 'iftop' to see what traffic is going
across the wire. 

Try running BackupPC_dump by hand to test the backup and see if it'll start
moving files successfully (but apart from troubleshooting purposes it's
generally a poor way to initiate backups since BackupPC_dump doesn't
coordinate with the BackupPC daemon, it's normally called by the daemon).

It may take a long time for the backup to begin, simply because the sheer
number of files means it takes a long time to assemble a list of all of
them. Also, watch your memory (including swap) usage. You will likely have
to break up your backup into smaller chunks to make it go faster and
possible even just to fit into your RAM+swap.
