Riiiiiiight, I guess wildcarding is how Verizon serves you those annoying http://wwwwz.websearch.verizon.net pages.
I updated the DNS forwarders as well as /etc/resolv.conf to use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, Google's public DNS. Problem solved; DNS fails when it should.

Yes, I forgot about that evil practice. They should have an 'opt-out'
mechanism somewhere but it's probably easier to just not use their dns
servers.
