A quick fix might be to add the --one-file-system option to the tar 
command so it will ignore all mount points.  I always do that anyway to 
avoid picking up ad-hoc DVD/USB or network mounts that might happen to 
be active, but then you have to be sure you explicitly add every 
filesystem that you do want to back up.
