You may not think you have time to do something like this. It's a good idea
to do some kind of test from the factory on drives like this. Seagate has
Seatools. Whatever the case, you completely format the drive. Then you start
using it again.

I imagine something is going on here though. Maybe you don't have enough
power from the power supply? Maybe the controller failed?
