# sudo -u backuppc ssh -p 22252 root@backup-server
sudo: no passwd entry for backuppc!

Which is where i tried to add the backuppc user to the client machine
to see if that was the problem.

If i understand correctly the client is acting as the ssh server?

No, the server is trying to connect to the client, as it's the client.  There shouldn't be a backuppc user on the client.  You want the BackupPC server to connect to the client as root.
