I don't know what happened to it, but at one time there was development 
being done on a 'distributed
file system', where the data was 'raided' across many systems, so if 
some of the systems 'went away'
the data was still there and updated.  And when they came back, it was 
automatically put back in and
'synced'.  It was supposed to use all much of the 'unused space' on 
client desktops, but the people on
the desktop would have to go into the 'front door' to see the data, not 
just what was on their desk.
