If you can use an SMTP relay on some other machine or at your ISP there is no
need for a full-fledged mailer like like sendmail, postfix or exim. After all,
backuppc only sends mail so ANY packet that provides /usr/sbin/sendmail will
suffice.

list the following:
courier-mta, esmtp-run, exim, exim4-daemon-heavy, exim4-daemon-light, masqmail,
msmtp-mta, nullmailer, postfix, smail, ssmtp, xmail
I use "nullmailer" myself. Couldn't be easier.
