Hi all,
I'm just answering to myself in case someone needs to do the same thing :)

It's actually quite trivial:

You just have to set the mount point as non-writeable by user backuppc
(it usually is the default if You create the mount-point as root).

This way if the external disk is not mounted BackupPC aborts instantly.

If the disk is mounted (and writeable, of course!!) it will backup as
instructed.

I'm doing manual /umount/switch/remount having care to check no backup
is currently under way.
I assume some automated switch could be easy to implement.
