Thanks, you were correct, in the amanda file in xinet.d I had "lib" instead of "lib64" in the path. Fixing that and bouncing xinetd solved the problem.

I appreciate everyone's help. I guess I was too hung up on the 32 bit boxes to even give this a second thought. Embarrassing but I'm glad for the extra sets of eyes going over this.

Just to double check once more, I've killed iptables on both boxes (server & client), still not working.

What's the output of /sbin/chkconfig, specifically the bits relating to xinetd? Also, you mentioned earlier that you have a script which puts the amanda file in /etc/xinetd.d. Did you modify that file to reflect the location of the amandad binary on the 64bit client vs. on 32bit clients?
