Might your chown'ing affected the things amanda uses.
I'm thinking the executables, including the setuid'ed ones,
the directories where amanda stores it logs and info,
the config directory and files,
the directory where gnutar-lists are stored,
the directory where debugging files are stored.

On the latter, there were some strange results when
the debug directory was owned by root.
