I would say that the big thing the third party solution will need to do is mark the file system as having done a level 0 dump, so that Amanda knows when the full backups were done. Otherwise, what you'll essentially have is Amanda doing level 1 backups without ever having a level 0 done, which will work out to endless full backups. ;)

This may prove quite problematic for you, especially in terms of recovery. Is there a reason why you would want to use two different backup tools? If the third party tool is effective / mandated by the organization, why use Amanda at all? Or, vice versa, if the third party tool is inadequate / inflexible for your incrementals, why not use Amanda to do the full backups?
