Thanks, Jon.  I'll give that a try.  The reason I assumed that it was
sg1 is due to these lines from my dmesg:

Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 03 Lun: 00
  Vendor: QUANTUM  Model: DLT7000          Rev: 2561
  Type:   Sequential-Access                ANSI SCSI revision: 02

and...

Attached scsi generic sg2 at scsi1, channel 0, id 3, lun 0,  type 1

QUANTUM DLT7000 sure looks like the tape drive, no?
