Ken,

Try using GnuTar for your dump program instead.  Running 'dump' over 
an NFS mount if it ever works, is likely to be frought with problems.

To compile amanda, you may well need to install a bunch of things 
like gcc, automake/autoconf, etc.  The other option might be 
attempting to cross-compile for HPUX from Linux, since Linux has all 
the necessary tools to begin with.
