Re: Difference between archive and backup?!?

The biggest difference is old backup versions expire after a time
while the active backup never does. An Archive file is not a
"version" but a specific file with a specific retention period. When
that period expires, the file is gone regardless of its current status
on the node.
Five archives of the same unchanged file is no problem. You get five
files. Five backups of an unchanged file can happen with a selective
backup not with an incremental backup but if you only retain three
versions via the management class you will only have three identical
copies, thats all. A single management class lets you specify one set
of retention parameter settings for backups, another for archives.
Also archives go into a different storage pool so you can have
off-site copies of a node's archive files but only onsite copies of
the node's backups.

Hi folks!
I know that this sounds stupid - but I've never really endulged myself into the
intricacies of the ADSM Archive process. What exactly is Archiving - and how
does it differ from storing several versions of backup files and later
migrating these into long-term tape storage pools, using policy and management
classes?
