If you are going to be backing up CIFS shares, you may want to stick with the
NDMP. The "advantage" of NDMP is that it maintains all of the file attributes
through backup and restore. This is not the case if you just mount the CIFS
filesystems on you backup server and back up the files. Conversely, NDMP is
known to be painfully slow, especially when backing up a lot of small files (or
a lot of files of any size for that matter).
It is not always available or easy, but it is best to test out both options in
your environment (or a test environment similar to your production).
Wish it was cut and dry, but like most things in this industry, it's not.

Lisa, Our environment is not the same as yours. We are Linux w/7.3.2 of
Networker (doing ok with just a few minor problems that we have to deal
with). We have 3 X EMC DataMovers that we are currently using NDMP to backup
over FC.
We are planing on changing that from NDMP to mounting the NAS file systems
via NFS for: 1) already sunk ~10K per NDMP license - in case we add to our
NAS situation - no more ~10K per DM; 2) Easier for redirected recoveries;
and 3) More flexibility w.r.t to separating our Full backups and
Incremental/Levels into different Pools - for disaster recoveries
situations.
