Of course in 7.3 they have thrown out all of the GUIs you are talking
about. Now we're all going to have to use exactly the same GUI and we
get to complain about java webstart instead, but it is actually better
to use once you've got the client versions and JRI sorted out - and
hopefully they can focus on improving the features of the product
instead of having to support two separate bug-laden development
streams...

I've actaully got used to the 7.3 NMC and am using it to manage all our
7.1.2 servers.... I havent entirely weened myself off the motif client
yet though.... I plan to roll out NMC now across the organisation so
we're ready when(if?) we start to put 7.3.1 on our servers.

And all this talk about cmdline access being evil? I'm puzzled, as most
sysadmins would refuse to use any product we couldn't have cmdline and
scripting access to. To give an example, when we have major changes
planned in our organisation we have to be very explicit in our proposal,
so we can plan to do this stuff via the cmdline and put all the commands
in the change request document, nothing sucks the fun out of work more
than having to describe using a GUI in words (ok there are worse
things).

I suppose it all depends on your individual perspective though. Many
legato users have a fairly simple setup, and want to get on with their
real jobs, but just as many others just do backups.

As for sending a message up the Legato food chain. All I would say to
that is that there are a lot of lurkers on this list who work for EMC
;-) you probably got to the right eyeballs already.

And my 2c worth on windows vs linux.... The linux kernel is more
efficient at IO, if you need performance at a low hardware price you
should use linux. Either way you go it costs money in human resourcing
and that's the part of the equation that will make a difference - if you
have unix admins all well and good, but if you are all windowsey types
why not try windows first as it might be fast enough for your needs.

I am going to Legato training in Santa Clara next week. I just printed
this last exchange... I will hand deliver it. We'll see how far up the
food chain I can go. :)
