For those that are interested:
When Legato back's up to the advanced file type device it doesnt use the
"old" way of backing up to disk - i.e. Legato's open tape format. It uses
uasm - which goes a fair way of "compressing" (now this is where some may
disagree) - files to disk. You can as well do simultaneous backups and
restores and a combination of backups and clones. (as soon as a saveset is
done it is eligible).
As most people know the disk sub systems available nowadays are relatively
large (im talking at least 2 - 3 TB and up). If you dont have one yet ... im
sure I can sell you one <grin>....
Robert, typically most people will backup to disk and keep their data online
(i.e. nearline) for a few days etc - depending on your backup size and your
typical restore requirements.
One would then do a stage operation to get all of your data from your disk
to tape (doesnt necessarily need to happen in your backup window - which
makes it very attractive for some).
We have some clients that are looing at keeping the data for a week on disk
(i.e. a full cycle of dailies and a weekly) and then having the tape for DR
and corporate governance purposes etc etc.

Riaan

Shawn,
For us non file device folks..
I imagine since it is not a tape drive that the volume is 500GB with no
compression taking place?
I have some clients that are 500GB+ in size.. I rely on the tape drive
compression quite a bit..I can't being to think the amount of file devices
I would need to do my backups. I would need to stage the fulls to tape
almost immediately after they are backed up ??
