That same issue can cause a Linux machine to not backup, and error with: "file index error: permission denied, 'root' on (client name) must have
remote access privilege to (client name).

This is documented in support note 69990 in the knowledge base.

We had this exact error last week, and had us baffled for quite a while,
as we already had several Linux machines successfully backing up.

entries written...

Looks like I have a solution. I had looked at the /etc/hosts file many
times, but there was one of those "invisble" problems. It SHOULDN'T have
made a difference but it did.

The short name of the host had been added by someone to the localhost
127.0.0.1 line, so my entries had no real effect.

Apparently, this confuses Networker to no end, and causes the server to
use its on index for the store. Bizarre.

Thanks David; but unfortunately, this doesn't help either. The /etc/ hosts file is fine. What I found out after posting this message was that the system administrator who owns this system moved it from a physical server to a virtual server (VMware), but kept the IP address and the host name the same. This was done the same day that this backup problem started, but for the life of me, I don't see why that would matter.
