Hi Irene

Learning more about Solaris and its support for non-Sun tape devices is a
current background project for me. When I'm done, I'll plan to post results
to this list, as a lot of experienced folks still are fuzzy on it (like me).

Here is some information I got from another engineer in my team.

Anyhow, I also have a Solaris 8 system in the lab and had occasion recently
to set up the st.conf file for use with LTO drives. Solaris 8 doesn't have
entries you can uncomment in st.conf for LTO because it wasn't out at the
time. However, Solaris 9 does, so we take the lines from Solaris 9's
st.conf and shoehorn them into st.conf on Solaris 8. Here are the lines you
need to add (these are for LTO and LTO2):

tape-config-list=
...
        "IBM", "IBM Ultrium", "CLASS_LTO1",
        "IBM     ULT3580-TD2", "IBM 3580 Ultrium-2",           "CLASS_LTO2",
        "IBM     ULTRIUM-TD2", "IBM Ultrium-2",                "CLASS_LTO",
        "IBM     ULTRIUM-TD1", "IBM Ultrium", "CLASS_LTO1",
...
CLASS_LTO1     = 1, 0x24, 0, 0x45863d, 2, 0x00, 0x01, 0;
CLASS_LTO2 = 2,0x3B,0,0x45863d,2,0x40,0x42,0,60,0,540,9060,720,720,9050;
CLASS_LTO = 2,0x3B,0,0x45863d,2,0x40,0x42,0,60,0,540,9060,720,720,9060;

That should do it. We've heard that an IBM driver should NOT be used. When
the st.conf modification is properly applied, the Solaris /var/log/messages
file will have the second string in the tape-config-list as in:

Mar 14 12:02:02 dragon genunix: [ID 936769 kern.info] st37 is
/pci@8,700000/lpfc@2/st@2,0
Mar 14 12:02:02 dragon scsi: [ID 365881 kern.info]
/pci@8,700000/lpfc@1/st@1,6 (st98):
Mar 14 12:02:02 dragon  <IBM Ultrium>

That example is for an LTO1 drive, NOT LTO2, by the way. Before applying
the edits, the info that got logged was:

Mar 14 11:50:27 dragon genunix: [ID 936769 kern.info] st98 is
/pci@8,700000/lpfc@1/st@1,6
Mar 14 11:50:27 dragon scsi: [ID 365881 kern.info]
/pci@8,700000/lpfc@1/st@1,7 (st99):
Mar 14 11:50:27 dragon  <Vendor 'IBM     ' Product 'ULTRIUM-TD1    '>

Notice that the SCSI Inquiry vendor and product are regurgitated if the
driver st.conf file is NOT set up correctly.

I _think_ that the same holds true for a 'mt -f /dev/rmt/xxxx status': if
the output shows the label from the st.conf, then that entry was used.

Hope this helps!

I am still having tape problems so here is the detail about my system.

Legato has had me add the following to the st.conf:

tape-config-list=

"IBM     ULTRIUM-TD1", "IBM Ultrium", "CLASS_3580",
"IBM     ULT3580-TD1", "IBM 3580 Ultrium", "CLASS_3580";
CLASS_3580 = 1, 0x24, 0, 0x45863d, 2, 0x00, 0x01, 0;

I then did a boot -r.

I am running (uname -srv) SunOS 5.9 Generic_112233-04

I just added patch 13277-19. Here is a complete list of patches from
patchadd -p:

Patch: 113277-04 Obsoletes: Requires: 112233-02 112834-02 Incompatibles:

Do you have an explicit entry for LTO in the st.conf, or are you using
the built-in settings?

What OS and st patches do you have?
