I never found release to be useful on FreeBSD, because it leaves /dev/nsaX
open.  At least for me, that prevents the tape from being ejected.  Likewise,
software can't open /dev/nsaX if there is no tape in the drive.

One could argue that is the correct behavior too -- is it sensible to eject a
tape that software is using?  The problem is that there is no separate
protocol for reserving a drive.
