I keep stats on errors/GB for each tape. When they get too high, I disable
the tape.

I do that as required, including reducing my retention period.

I'm looking at FreeNAS for putting stuff on disk, then to tape.

Do you buy new or used?  I have many used tapes, and by testing them
first, I eliminate the bad.
