I´m running a PV-124T with LTO3 on CentOS 5.1 too and it works (but I´m 
using bacula version 2.2.8). Have you tried to change the user/group to 
root in the init-scripts of baclua? I remember some problems in the 
regarding non-root.
SD_USER=root
SD_GROUP=root
