For years I have had my database on a 3rd machine with the director
and storage being on other machines as well. The director resides on
its own 2 processor Opteron 248 and the storage on a similar > 3 year
old machine. For me none of these machines were purchased directly for
the backup. The director is the main image file server with 3TB of
raid6 disk space while the storage also served as vmware server.

A linux software raid-0 partition on SATA disks (I recommend 4 or
better) will be just fine as well. I have 4 250GB SATA 1 drives in my
sd. For LTO2 you only need to get sustained 50MB/s read speed while
writing is happening to the same array.
