AFAIK, the answer would be yes. I suspect the challenge is is the hash
collision where you have a compressed file that hash collides with an
un-compressed file, and thus you need to deal with that somehow....
Clearly I don't know all the details, or if that is the real reason,
just my suspicion...

I have a backuppc machine where I enabled compression but didn't
convert the pool... It does work fine that way...
