My crashes have all been hardware-related, although the reason was not 
always obvious (one box took a weekend-long run of memtest to detect bad 
RAM), others have had bad power supplies.

Have you run an fsck on all of your filesystems?  Also, I thought 
current Centos was 4.8.  I always assume that lots of bugs get fixed in 
the updates.
