A query,

We recently switched to tar rather than ufsdump for a large
partition on one of our systems (Thanks Jon LaBadie for working
through the exclude lists with me) and dumps are working well,
in terms of fitting on the tapes.

We had a problem with performance though, 18 hours of wall clock
time. Last night we disabled indexing and the wall clock time
dropped to 10 hours.

I'd thought, perhaps mistakenly, that indexing kept a list of the
files being backed up, and was aware that that index was also
being zipped, but I'd figured that it was a small amount of data
and the additional processes on the system wouldn't amount to much.

Either they did amount to something significant, or we just got
very lucky with last night's backups (the scientific test would
be to turn indexing back on and see...).

What really happens when GTAR INDEXING is enabled ?

                                                thank you,

                                                Brian
