The above error seems like you have domain GANDALF,
and below in /etc/amandapass you have TELESPAN.
Show the real config and real error for one and only one entry.

The DocSetts share definitely exists and I can connect to it
using smbclient -U chris -E -W TELESPAN -c quit

Presumably amanda adds the additional backslashes when linking to
Samba? Or do I need to add these in one of the amanda files
(disklist or amandapass or .amandahosts)?

Pls show the relevant lines of all these files ...

disklist contains the line:
bilbo.stow-jones.local    //gandalf/DocSetts    nocomp-user-gnutar

amandapass contains the line (obfuscated password):
//gandalf/DocSetts    chris%password    TELESPAN

To be 100% sure: the /etc/amandapass file is on the host bilbo.stow-jones.local ?

If the host running smbclient has a different /etc/amandapass
with TELESPAN as group, then that may explain your confusion.

.amandahosts contains the lines:
gandalf.stow-jones.local    amanda
gandalf.stow-jones.local    root

Fine.
If this is really a client, then you only need the first line.
If it is the amanda server, then you also need the second line
(to be able to restore as root).
