I think I'd start from the other end by inserting the tape, doing an 
mt -f /dev/ice rewind, then a dd if=/dev/ice bs=32768 count=1 and see 
whats on the first block of the tape.  I don't believe this should 
give an error of any kind unless there is truely something wrong with 
the hardware.  Substitute the real device name for the generic 'ice' 
above of course.  If it works, and you see the amanda tape label's 
data on the screen, then the amlabel -f worked.
