If you do 'make install' as root and pick a proper user/group for the 
amanda user, this won't be a problem.  For tar backups, amanda uses the 
setuid root 'runtar' script.  For dump backups, you need to make sure the 
amanda user has read permissions on the raw disk devices.  On Linux, e.g., 
I do this by putting the amanda user in the 'disk' group.
