Now this is strange!
I sent a reply on a post from Kris Vassallo, but the reply never
showed up on the list. I did it from home, being frequently distracted
by my kids, so I thought, I forgot to CC the list.

I can't find my reply in the archives at Yahoo groups or theaimsgroup either.

But some people did receive the message. And replied to it! See below.
(Geert happens to live near to me, but I guess that's doesn't matter.)

The last couple of days 2 people already contacted me offline (because
I seem to be a frequent poster?) to ask if a post they sent was seen
on the list. Or is this just a bad day?

If you install dump for ext2, then you should also try out that one.
Dump takes only a few seconds or minutes compared to gnutar for such
filesystems.

I thought you do not want to use dump on Linux, since it's unsafe?

Gr{oetje,eeting}s,

In personal conversations with technical people, I call myself a hacker. But
when I'm talking to journalists I just say "programmer" or something like that.
