So this looks like there was no backup of hda2 from ha-node01 on that
tape. Should there have been?

And that looks like either a corrupted file on tape, a bad gzip, or
hardware problems.
What Linux distro are you running, and what version of tar is there? If
there's a 2.2.17 kernel laying around, it's gotta' be old...
