Are you sure it's the *only* difference.  No difference in distro/version, 
ipchains/iptables, patch levels, etc?

Are there any files created in /tmp/amanda when you try to run amdump?  
amandad*debug, sendsize*debug, sendbackup*debug, would all be useful.
