Re: [NV-L] Linux Suse SNMP agent issue

Sorry but no, Larry. I am totally
confused by what you've just said and I recommend opening a problem to
Support. There is nothing unique about the SNMP sysDesc field.
Every host in your network could have that the same. It has
nothing to do with duplicate IP addresses or loadhosts; it's merely what
was returned by that device when it was queried by netmon for that MIB
object (system.sysDescr). Typically what's returned is just a line
of text added to the snmpd.conf file on that machine. And nothing
at all depends on what it says. You can change it to say anything
you like and netmon should add and poll the device just fine.
Whatever your problem is, I don't think
it has anything to do with SNMP sysDesc.

James,
I know what's happenning.. the suse host i'm trying to add, already exists
in netview database on multiple servers under "SNMP sysDecr".
So multiple servers has this Suse server name under "SNMP sysDescr".
Now i have no idea how Suse name was added to multiple servers. I have
to investigate. Any idea what could be wrong?
Thanks,
Larry

Sounds like a network mask issue. If you don't
specify one, loadhosts will "guess", which might give you a problem
like this. I'm not a big fan of loadhosts for that reason as well as others.
Is there some reason why you cannot just put the IP address at the top
of the seed file and issue "netmon -y" to cause him to reread
it, or ovstop/ovstart him?

James,
-7.1.3 FP3
-I'm using load hosts command to add to NetView
-oid_to_type has two entries as below:
1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10:Linux:Linux UCD-SNMP Agent:S
1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.250.10:Linux:Linux UCD-SNMP Agent:
-Let me explain - When i loadhosts a linux server, after doing a nmdemandpoll,
netview reports there are duplicate IP addresses and deletes linux server.
After me deleteing those duplicate addresses, i again loadhosts Linux server.
this time again netview reports there are duplicate IP addresses which
are different from the last time it found . This keeps going on and on
when i add and delete. Wonder where and what's wrong?

Subject: Re: [NV-L] Linux Suse SNMP agent issue
Sounds like apples and oranges to me Larry,
but with 7.1.3 (Fixpack ??) I wouldn't know. Even FP04 shipped September
30, 2005.
And what do you mean by "manually add the node"? to the seed
file? using loadhosts? which?
As for the difference between the net_snmp agent and the ucd_agent, the
ucd_agent is precursor to net_snmp.
See http://www.net-snmp.org/about/history.html
What do you have in your /usr/OV/conf/oid_to_type file for the UCD agent
you are using? It should be one of these:
1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.250.10:Linux:Linux UCD-SNMP Agent:
1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10:Linux:Linux UCD-SNMP Agent:
2021 is the IANA Enterprise number for UC Davis (so it's base for the UCD
Agent's initial OID) and 8072 is for the new version, which is net-snmp.
But none of this has anything to do with duplicate IPs so far as I know.
I couldn't find any record of netmon getting confused about duplicate IP
addresses when discovering a UCD or net-snmp agent, but you can search
the archives for yourself.
Good luck.

Hi all,
I'm having an issue to discover the Linux Suse SNMP agent into our Netview
(7.1.3). When i manually add the node, it discovers and netmon deletes
it right away indicating duplicate IP addresses found and in fact there
are no duplicate IP's exist in database.
Has anyone experienced this issue before?
What's the difference bewteen net-snmp and ucd-snmp? Could that be a problem?
Thanks as usual,
Larry
