The same way that NetView knows that any two distinct IP addresses are on the
same physical server -- through SNMP. Every SNMP agent maintains an interface
tables and that is one of the main things that NetView queries in each device
after it is discovered. It is fundamental that your servers have SNMP installed
and working, else NetView will not manage them very well.

This dovetails with the questions Ray asked. What do your NIC servers look
like? Pick one off the map, right click on it, pick "Tools" then "Display
Object Information", and see many interfaces it has in the TopM Interface Count.
The TopM Interface List tells what they are. Are you managing all of them or
just the ones with NIC?

HI- So, if each NIC interface has a different ip address, how does NEtview
know that those addresses are from the same physical server ?? Each
interface
is on it's own separate LAN segment, allowing for a segment to fail, and
still
allow backup routes to get to the server around the failure.

thanks + see ya

Jim:
I do not think you need to use ruleset for this. If you have multiple NICs
on a box and if you manage all these interfaces with NetView, you will get
Node Down event only when all interfaces (ie., all NICs) are down.
