On unix i make good use of exclude files

The standard exclude_list i roll out to all clients is as follows

core
/proc
/tmp
/cdrom
/dev/fd
/var/crash
/var/run
/var/tmp
/etc/mnttab

Then i exclude files for certain backups which are not required, eg
log_files which i have in a separate log_archiving policy

Hope this helps
