If you are using 4.5 and specifically FP3, there is a new tool called
vmdb_merge that is designed to help you merge the two volDB's. Merging
mediaDB's is easy, but the volDB's as of 3.4 have a unique header that
makes things a bit more difficult...which is why I believe vmdb_merge
rolled into the picture. =20
=20
Vmdb_merge is not for the faint of heart, you really need to understand
the netbackup/media manager architecture very well to feel comfortable
with the process.
=20
One of the biggest challenges when merging two master servers are the
volume pools of dissimilar configuration. This then does bring into
issue the two mediaDB's, since the volume pool is recorded in the
mediaDB when a tape is written by a media server. Volume pools are
tracked internally by index numbers. So Master1 may have the following
pools
=20
NONE - 0
NetBackup - 1
Main - 2=20
Duplicates - 3
HR900 - 4
=20
And Master2 may have similarly named but not in the same order
=20
NONE - 0
NetBackup - 1=20
Duplicates - 2
Main - 3
HR100 - 4

While the names are close, the index numbers are way off. Therefore, if
a merge is done without reconciliation, media may "appear" to be in
pools other than what you originally intended.
=20
Vmdb_merge will look for conflicts in your configurations and present
them to you. It will not fix any of the conflicts however with one
exception; it will fix the pool index number conflicts and the entries
in the mediaDB. It is important to note that after you have done a
merge like this and you import a tape PRE-MERGE for the purposes of
restore, it may appear in a volume pool other than what it was
originally created in. This shouldn't have any negative effect on the
program's ability to restore data though.
=20
One more caveat...if you are using ACS/LS...at least as of my last week
as a consultant with DataStaff, vmdb_merge had some issues. I was
working with engineering to "fix" vmdb_merge but unfortunately ran out
of time. =20
=20
Suffice it to say, this is a very cool tool if anything to be used to
identify conflicts in your environment, etc.
=20
As mentioned earlier, If you are the least bit hesitant about using this
tool, don't. And definitely use it in a non-production environment
first to become familiar with the processes.

We went through that drill last year turning a dual master environment
into a Master and Media environment. Because there's catalog merging
involved, we were told by Veritas that if we attempted to do it
ourselves and failed, they would not provide support to recover so we
opted to have one of their consultants come in to do it for us. I don't
know if they were just trying to drum up consulting business or if it
was just that complex (I suspect the former). However, it went smoothly
and even better, worked when they were done. The one thing I do know is
if you're planning on upgrading your NetBackup version at the same time,
it appears to be easier to do that on each master BEFORE you do the
merge. Not a lot of help I'm sure but that's what we had to go through
to get it done. Given the complexities of the NBU catalog (as professed
by many on this list), I would make sure you really understand what you
want to do and how to do it before you do it and if you have the
slightest bit of apprehension, consider using consultant help (not
necessarily Veritas) to accomplish.

Greetings Group - The subject of merging master servers has been brought
up=20
before, but I just haven't been able to pull it together. I think what
I'm=20
trying to do should be easy, perhaps someone can help me.
I've got 2 machines, both Win2k master servers (4.5). I'd like to make
one=20
of them a media server to the other master server, maintaining all my
media=20
and backup information in the process. Can anyone set me straight here?

Thanks in advance
DR

even
better, worked when they were done. The one thing I do know is if you're
planning on upgrading your NetBackup version at the same time, it =
appears to be
easier to do that on each master BEFORE you do the merge. Not a lot of =
help I'm
sure but that's what we had to go through to get it done. Given the
complexities of the NBU catalog (as professed by many on this list), I =
would
make sure you really understand what you want to do and how to do it =
before you
do it and if you have the slightest bit of apprehension, consider using
consultant help (not necessarily Veritas) to =
accomplish.

Greetings Group - The subject of merging master servers has been brought =
up
before, but I just haven't been able to pull it together. I think =
what
I'm
trying to do should be easy, perhaps someone can help me.
I've got 2 machines, both Win2k master servers (4.5). I'd like to =
make
one
of them a media server to the other master server, maintaining all my =
media
and backup information in the process. Can anyone set me straight =
here?

Thanks in advance
