I agree with Curtis, Index Engines has a powerful tool. There are also several
other ways one can get at the data besides downloading a copy of Networker but
that will work as well. I think with all the posts, you probably have guessed
that the answer is yes there are several tools and ways that one can read a
tape.

What you will want to point out to the auditors is the fact that no matter what
backup software you use for your backups there will always be the risk of
someone getting a tape and reading it. The only way to prevent this is
physically secure the tapes and send the auditors in another direction or (I
dare say it!) encrypt them.

Try to find out what regulations the auditors are holding you too? Being in
the financial industry there are several regulations your company needs to meet
in order to pass an audit like this. Typical this question is noted as a
"risk" or "high risk" with a dependence on physical security to fix it. In the
past few years this has proven itself not to be a good resolution with tapes
being lost, falling off trucks, etc...

Depending on what regulations you all have to meet or what the outcome is, you
may need to move to something along the lines of bringing encryption into the
mix, but I would recommend that being the last option.

Besides the posts already posted, there is Index Engines. They're a commercial
product that you can feed tapes from NetBackup, NetWorker, TSM, Backup Exec,
and Ntbackup, and they'll index them and allow you to grab stuff right off
them, including grabbing individual emails out of Exchange backups without
having to restore Exchange!

I'd say that makes the answer to your question a yes.

Good day,

I need to know if it's easy for someone to recover data stored on a tape
by Networker if that someone doesn't have Networker to restore the data
with. It may sound like I'm that someone but this is a security audit
question. They want to know if someone who gets his hands on one of our
tapes can restore the data easily.

Thanks,
David
