Given a tape with no other information that it is a 'backup' tape, how would you 'know' to use Networker to read it, what if it was written by Netbackup or another backup product ?

I once saw the networker multiplexing format explained in detail.

So i could imagine to make a copy from the tape with dd to the disk
and write a small application which splits the stream....
