In regard to: Re: [Networker] A way to recover Networker data without...:
That is provided that they know the data on the tape requires Networker to read
it.....(and a compatible version at that...)
Given a tape with no other information that it is a 'backup' tape, how
would you 'know' to use Networker to read it, what if it was written by
Netbackup or another backup product ?
Every NetWorker volume starts with a label in a well-defined format. One
can use `dd' to read a bit of the tape and determine if it's in NetWorker
format. I've posted the dd command to do that here a couple different
times over the years, so anyone that searches the archives should be able
to determine if it's a NetWorker volume pretty quickly.
That exercise would need to be repeated for other backup products, but
anyone that's motivated should have no problem determining what format
the data is in.
The answer to the original question depends on how you define "easily",
but I agree with Ken -- it's easy. Under some conditions, you can skip
several of the steps he listed and just use scanner and uasm together to
recover the data.
