We are having problems when we backup up some file names that include Chinese characters. This looks similar to a problem we had over a year ago but was resolved by an updated Networker client combo patch (LGTpa84291, specifically LGTpa81861 - cannot backup pathnames longer than 256 chars).

The server abends in the SAVE.NLM process. This breaks the backup for the volume containing the data and can also stop subsequent volumes on the server being backed up.

The problem was caused previously because the file names exceeded character length limits and was related to UTF8. This problem only recently started to occur again and did not occur directly after any software changes we have made.

An overview of our configuration

Backup server -
Solaris running Sun badged version of Legato Networker 7.2.Build.311 Network Edition/65

Backup clients -
Netware 6.5 SP6 and post SP6 patches including libc6i (libc6j is a little too recent!)
NSS volumes accessed via iSCSI on Netapp filers

Backup agent -
Networker client 7.2 with these file versions
NETWORKR.NLM v7.02.01 27 July 2006
NSREXEC.NLM v7.02.01 20 February 2006
NSREXECD.NLM v7.02.01 20 February 2006
RECOVER.NLM v7.02.01 20 February 2006
SAVE.NLM v7.02.01 20 February 2006
SAVEFS.NLM v7.02.01 20 February 2006

There may be a newer client version but the ftp.legato site isn't up to date (or the file is not in an obvious place), the ftp.emc site doesn't appear to have any Legato software and it is not possible for us to download from the EMC web site. We are having difficulty with our support for the product as we do not purchase directly from EMC and so access to updates is a very slow process and technical information is gleaned mainly from this list.

I have two questions.

1. Is there a later version/patch of the clientpak for Netware, or perhaps later files than those I have listed above?

2. Has anyone else had a problem like this recently and if so how are you working with it?

Best regards,

Andrew Horne
