The other option is to use DSA (search for that in the Legato Admin
guide) and backup the Netapps accross the network using the NDMP
protocol. We have a dedicated Gig-E VLAN setup with jumbo frames doing
that backup, and it works very well. The advantage of doing it this way
is that you don't have to dedicate the drives to the NetApp and they
streams are parallelized with other backup streams.

It all works pretty well. I have two drives zoned and allocated to each
NDMP filer. You need to create your ndmp client and ndmp tape drives
according to the admin guide. You will either need root password or
create an account that has root authority. This user and password needs
to be defined to the tape drives and client definition. I am using LTOII
drives and I get around 30MBs. I am backing up 17TB and millions and I
mean millions of files so the performance is pretty good. You can only
have one stream per drive. So make sure if you have two drives to your
NDMP client have the client parallelism at two and your drive
parallelism at one. Add more drives if you have em. Just don't allocate
more than two drives per card on the filer.
