They are on the network, but not protected by our UPS which can run for
days. I do not want to suffer the consequences of desktop pc's being
there at times and other times not, possibly having other applications
running there, etc.

Why not install the relevant NetWorker client on the desktops and add  
them to your nightly backup schedule, or are the machines you have in  
mind, not on your network?
